Sergeant Johnston got word from the commanding officer of his training platoon that one of his troops, Private Riley, had lost his mother in a car accident.
“Break it to him gently, Sergeant,” the CO said.
Sergeant Johnston ordered the platoon to assemble outside their barracks, and called them to attention.
“ Listen up!” he shouted. “All men whose mothers are still alive, one step forward, MARCH! NOT so fast, Riley!”
