Censoring Seuss

Censoring Seuss

According to a 2019 study by researchers from The Conscious Kid’s Library and the University of California at San Diego, Dr. Seuss’s early books, “If I Ran The Zoo,” “And To think That I saw It On Mulberry Street,” “McElligot’s Pond,” “Scrambled Eggs Super!” “The Cat’s Quizzer,” and “On Beyond Zebra” all contain “Orientalism and anti-Black references, including characters of color presented in subservient, exotified, or dehumanized roles. Therefore children should not be allowed to read them.

We do not like you, Doctor S.
Your books are such a racist mess!
We do not like them here or there.
We do not like them anywhere!
Though banning books is a slippery slope
And might make all our children dopes,
We can’t risk letting kiddies read
Stuff with which we don’t agree.
Let’s ban Shakespeare, while we’re making cuts.
He dissed the blacks and Jews, tut-tut!
And what about the Holy Bible?
It’s full of hate speech, lies, and libel!
Science and math books are too bold:
They make kids question what they’re told.
Let’s throw subversive books away
And teach our kids just to obey!
