The Daily Kos for Friday, November 5th, 2021, reported that Oroville, California, a hotbed of Covid-19 denialism and mask refusal, has seceded from both the United States of America and the State of California. Mayor Chuck Reynolds and Vice-Mayor Scott Thompson declared Oroville a “constitutional republic,” independent of both the national and the state governments. “A democracy is run by people, and a republic is run by the laws of constitution,” said Chuck.
Hizzoner is a little muzzy about the definitions and relationships of democracies, republics, and constitutions, but his rugged individualizationism certainly stands out clearly, and I say yahoo, huzzah, and yippay! Following his bold example, and taking it a step further, I hereby renounce my allegiance to the United States and the States of New York and New Hampshire, and establish the Commonwealth of Tomsk, whose territory consists of some 24 acres of woodland and open fields on both sides of Route 136 between Peterborough and Greenfield, NH.
The population of Tomsk is comprised of Patsy Hobbs Tompkins, Prime Minister, Toby Tompkins, First Citizen, and two cats who will serve as the Commonwealth’s Ambassador to the United Nations, and its Secretary of State, respectively, provided that we do not ask them to leave the comforts of the Commonwealth, but allow them to conduct all diplomatic meetings via Zoom, and fall asleep the moment they get bored.
