As the celebration of the Resurrection of the Prince of Peace approaches, I find myself bemused by the ways fundamentalist Christians misinterpret Christ’s message.
Jesus called for a “brotherhood of man,” but the fundamentalists insist on a tribal community that hates those with foreign beliefs, cultures, and customs.
“Blessed be the poor in spirit?” Hell, no! Poor people are lazy sponges. Cut food stamps, eliminate welfare programs.
Christ revered the world we live in. Hah! The threat of global warming is alarmist, and efforts to clamp down on emissions will hurt corporations.
Christ is the Prince of Peace. The fundamentalists call for a pre-emptive war of religion that culminates in extreme violence toward Muslims.
Christ honored women, considering them men’s equals. The fundamentalists want to keep them pregnant, barefoot, and chained to the stove.
Well, at least we can celebrate the arrival of the Easter Bunny. Or the Easter Duck, since rabbits don’t lay eggs.
